The white rectangular ROAD CLOSED sign (R11-2) marks the point where a road is closed to traffic. It is a regulatory sign, so it is not advice: it means you cannot continue past it unless you are part of the work or otherwise authorized.

What it means

Section 6G.04 of the California MUTCD 2026 Edition says the ROAD CLOSED sign should be used when the roadway is closed to all road users except contractors’ equipment or officially authorized vehicles. The standard size in Table 6G-1 is 48 x 30 inches.

Related legends in the same series may be substituted where they fit better:

  • STREET CLOSED (R11-2a)
  • BRIDGE OUT (R11-2b)
  • PATH CLOSED (R11-2c)

What drivers often get wrong

Where it goes in a work zone

Section 6G.04 says Road Closed signs should be installed at or near the center of the roadway, on or above a Type 3 barricade that closes the road. Section 6K.07 adds that Type 3 barricades should be used to close or partially close a road, and at a road closure they may be placed completely across the roadway or from curb to curb.

Under Section 6I.02, the Detour Arrow (M4-10) sign should normally be mounted just below the ROAD CLOSED sign, with a horizontal arrow pointing left or right toward the detour.

Ahead of the closure, drivers should already have seen advance warning such as ROAD WORK AHEAD and ROAD CLOSED AHEAD.

What contractors need to know

  • Section 6G.04 says the R11-2 should be accompanied by appropriate warning and detour signing; it should not stand alone.
  • It is a Standard that Road Closed signs shall not be used where traffic is maintained through the zone on fewer lanes, or where the actual closure is some distance beyond the sign.
  • Where authorized equipment needs access, Section 6K.07 says responsibility for the Type 3 barricades should be assigned to a person who will restore the closure at the end of each work day.
  • Because a closure changes how traffic uses the network, the permitting agency typically expects a traffic control plan showing the barricades, signs and detour.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to drive past a ROAD CLOSED sign in California?

The R11-2 is a regulatory sign intended to keep all road users out except contractors’ equipment and authorized vehicles. Treat it as a closure and follow the detour; enforcement details are set by the Vehicle Code and local agencies.

What is the arrow sign under ROAD CLOSED?

That is usually the Detour Arrow (M4-10) sign. The CA MUTCD says it should normally be mounted just below the ROAD CLOSED sign, pointing toward the detour route.

Can ROAD CLOSED be used for a lane closure?

No. The manual says Road Closed signs shall not be used where traffic still flows through the work zone on a reduced number of lanes.
